Chilmark Springwater’s quality control program begins at our source. We get our Natural Spring Water from Mill Brook Springs, near the north shore, in Chilmark. These springs are surrounded by nearly 5,000 acres of permanent conservation protection. Our spring water flows to the surface, as ground water, and not as surface water, through glacial silica sands, in an area where there has never been any commercial or agricultural activity, and where housing density is very low. It contains no contaminants, and its mineral content is very low. That is why Chilmark Springwater is so pure.
We own Mill Brook Springs. It has been certified by the Mass. DEP as PWS 4062007 - a registered Public Water Supply source. It took two years of extensive analysis and testing to get this certification. Every quarter, year round, we do laboratory testing of the water from our spring, in compliance with DEP regulations. Also, two members of our staff are Mass. Drinking Water Facilities Certified Operators. They receive continuing education, and keep their licenses current.
In compliance with Mass. Dept. of Public Health regulations, as well as Federal Food and Drug laws, we have the latest technology CIP (clean in place) system to ensure that our entire bottling plant plumbing system remains clean and sanitary, at all times. Every time that we bottle, all parts of the system, including our tank truck, hoses, piping, pumps and filters are cleaned with filtered and ozonated spring water, containing no chemicals of any kind. Ozone is O3, a natural form of oxygen. This sterilizes all parts of the system.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health requires that we test both our spring water source, and our finished (bottled) product, once each week, using a State Certified testing laboratory. We not only test each week, we test each and every batch that we produce. Sometimes, in the summer, that is twice a day! This testing is cheap insurance that our quality control system is working properly, for the protection of Public Health. All laboratory sampling is done by trained and licensed Water Systems Operators. Additionally, two of our staff have taken the Mass. Food Handlers Safety Course. This course provides valuable information on proper procedures for the preparation and handling of food. We also perform “in-house” ozone testing of each bottling run, as an additional check that our equipment is working properly.
During bottling we employ a regimen designed to ensure that every bottle of water that we produce is of consistent quality, with the contents, as well as the inside of every bottle and cap, both clean and sterile. We use an electric fork lift with no exhaust fumes, and store all our supplies in a clean environment. Most deliveries are made in a closed van, to help keep our products clean, up to the point of delivery. We also supply our customers with leaflets describing how they can keep our water, and their dispensing appliances, clean and sanitary. Provided that they follow these guidelines, they will enjoy one of the purest and healthiest bottled waters available anywhere.
